Deefer Wins Ford 200 Pole

It has been quite the start for Tyler Deefer's 2018 campaign. After leading a race high 92 laps at Livonia and finishing 6th, Deefer backs that performance up with a pole at Boston. Deefer has been known to have great qualifying runs, as this is his 6th career pole, his last coming at Road America last season.

"We have a fast racecar," said Deefer to media, "I think the guys hooked me up this weekend. We've got a team that believes in ourselves, it is intriguing to get off to a hot start like this, but hopefully come race time we will continue to push. I feel totally confident in this team."

Alex Jates bounced back from a DNQ performance at Livonia with a runner-up pole at Boston. He will start alongside Deefer in what was a somewhat emotional qualifying run. Jates was also very quick in practice, scoring the 4th fastest time in that session.

"After what transpired last weekend we're just happy to be back at the track and now that we've qualified we have that weight lifted off our shoulders. Nobody cares about our Livonia DNQ anymore and we're moving forward. We have an excellent group of guys here, we're here to win and climb back into this championship race."

Another story during qualifying was Aaron Parker, driver for the new Holliday, Inc. team in his #03. Parker, a rookie who'd been waiting for his shot for quite a while with JN Motorsports, qualified 13th in his Dodge.

"Tell you what after the whirlwind of an offseason I've had it's pretty cool to be startin' up front." Parker really had no further comment, being the shy, timid guy he is, he immediately got up and left his meida chair to get back to his trailer. Very nice guy, but needs to work on his social skills a bit!

Among the list of drivers who didn't qualify were two guys who are still waiting for their shot at AERS glory. Garth Enterprises rookies Patrick McKenzie and Aaron Gallagher were touted as top prospects by AARO writers all through the past couple of years. With both missing their second consecutive race, it might be time to panic at the Garth Enterprises shop. Team owner Florence Garth was, like always, not pleased.

"Those two have the equipment, help, team around them and they're not getting it done. I oughta have a couple words with them. I'm not happy, we expect top notch results at this team and what is happening now is unacceptable."

Aaron Gallagher said, "I just don't know what is going on with this team right now. The guys aren't really giving me much to work with. I'm trying to give feedback but it's as if nobody is listening when I get back to the garage. It's disappointing and has got to change, unfortunately I don't know where to turn to."

Glossum, Lapinski look to continue recent Boston success

Boston has provided some good, clean racing over the years. The track is known as one that is relatively easy to drive, or at least, one of the easier to drive on the AERS schedule. This means opportunity for guys who may not have developed a strong distinct driving style at some of these racetracks, to get a win or contend. For drivers Shawn Glossum and Chad Lapinski, the two opposite ends of that spectrum are met as the two are a few of the only drivers in the field with a win here at Boston. Lapinski was the 2011 winner, and Glossum the 2015 winner.

“It’s just fun as hell to drive,” said the veteran Glossum, “This place is special fa me personally not only because of my first JN win but this is a track that you just love to come to.”

Glossum returns after a flawless run through the field in the late stages of the 2015 Ford 200, passing Todd Bradshaw late for the top spot and the victory.

“You know what last year I thought my homies brought the perfect setup. Man, we brought the same setup here this weekend, but we gotta see if the new Dodge chassis will respond to it the same way. The setup we have here allows for a late race push, so I’m not too concerned with starting 23rd.”

Glossum hasn’t been particularly fast in practice either, but it’s the exact same storyline for the 9 team as their 2015 weekend here.

Chad Lapinski is looking to return to form after a disappointing 2015 campaign, and would love to get back to winning. His first and only win occurred here in 2011.

“Yeah, I think we run very well at Boston. I try to work on stuff with my team all weekend and I think we have what we have. Not particularly thrilled about starting 19th but the car has been fine tuned and we got it just about right in happy hour.”

Asked what he likes about this track he said, “Yeah, I think this track is just fast and that’s what is so fun about it. In 3 and 4, you really don’t have to touch the brake pedal if you run it perfectly. Yeah, it’s fun, should be another fun race.”
