Richmond Grandstands Going Smoke-Free: Richmond International Raceway president Doug Fritz announced that Richmond International Raceway's grandstands will be smoke-free beginning this season. Fans who smoke may continue to do so, but in approved areas only. The new policy is in response to fan feedback. "Beginning this season, smoking will not be permitted in and in front of the grandstands or in portals leading to seating areas," said Fritz. "Additionally, restrooms, buildings and areas that were already smoke-free at Richmond International Raceway will continue to be smoke-free," said Fritz. "We are implementing this policy based on comments received from fans. Those who wish to smoke may continue to do so in designated areas." Grandstand ushers will monitor seating areas to ensure the grandstands remain smoke-free at America's Premier Short Track. Fans can notify an usher or use our text messaging service if they wish to report a violation of the non-smoking policy. Tickets for the Spring NASCAR Tripleheader Weekend at Richmond International Raceway go on sale this Friday [Jan 14] at 8:30 am. Children 12 and under are admitted free with a ticketed adult in general admission sections on Thursday and Friday. For tickets and additional information, go to rir.com or call 866-455-RACE (7223).(RIR)(1-11-2011)

THANK GOD.

This reminds me of the time I went to Richmond. The guy next to me was smoking like crazy.

If they're going to do this, then they might as well not let people drink alcohol at the track. It's part of society people. You should be used to it by now.

So that gives them less of a right. Alcohol does the exact same thing. And they give you that at the track.

It still has a risk of killing people that DON'T do it. It's called secondhand smoke. Drinking at the track will not affect anyone else unless you have a weapon or something with you.

That's all I'm going to say.

The thing is that doesn't give them any less of a right than the non-smokers.

Agreed. Plus I rather be sitting next to a smoker than a drunkin idiot

Facepalm.

If you sit two rows above a drunk, will you be harmed by their choices, assuming they just sit there and drink the whole race?

If you sit two rows above a smoker, will you be harmed by their choices, assuming they just sit there and smoke the whole race (and assuming there's not much wind)? What if you have asthma?

You are free to enjoy your freedoms unless you put someone else's freedoms at risk. When you drive drunk or on a f***ing cell phone, you put other peoples' freedoms to live at risk. Smoking puts other people's freedom to not inhale second hand smoke and get lung cancer later in life in jeopardy.

The argument that "smoking is part of society", is also invalid. This move from RIR is a way of slowly stamping smoking out of public places. Just because it's part of society now doesn't mean that it will ALWAYS be part of society. Remember, not too long ago, cigarette companies were allowed to indirectly advertise to children, and African-Americans and women were not depicted favorably in mainstream cinema.

I do have asthma and im still not bothered by second hand smoke. First hand smoke makes it difficult for me. Smoking will always be part of society no matter what anyone does just like crack, pot, heroin, and alcohol. Also ones not gonna get cancer by spending 3 or 5 hours with smoker. My mom has smoked all her life and i dont have cancer. Im not saying it doesnt cause cancer but it will take alot longer to kill you than a drunk plowing into you with his car or smashing a beer bottle on your head. If anything is gonna give me cancer its me smoking myself.
